Textile Conservation and Restoration Studio

Services

The studio specializes largely in the restoration of period needlepoint chair and settee covers. We work closely with furniture restorers and upholsterers as we believe cooperation between these different skills is crucial to a successful job – and to the well-being of the furniture. We can also source needlework or tapestries for furniture and can extend where necessary in order for it to fit a particular seat or back. Textiles can be examined by appointment at our studio, free of charge, or on site, when a fee will be charged.

We can mount textiles using archival materials in order to prepare them for framing and/or display and can also pack textiles for safe storage or transportation. Recently we have been mounting more contemporary textiles for display which has proved very popular. We are also able to offer an advisory service on the maintenance of historic textiles and can provide after care advice: we are able to carry out on-site work including emergency salvage operations. We can survey collections providing full documentation and condition reports and can give advice on storage and display. Written and photographic records are kept for each object and are available to clients on request.

Our studio is well equipped and includes cleaning and dyeing facilities enabling us to provide a comprehensive, all round service. We are able to manage both the safe wet cleaning and small scale solvent cleaning of fragile textiles. Conservation

Textile is treated so that as much of the original object as possible is retained, including some historic previous repairs, and nothing is added except for the conservation medium:

Restoration

Textile is repaired so that the piece appears nearly as it would have originally, but it may be made strong enough for further use. Used mainly in treatment of canvas work and tapestry covers for seat furniture.
